12412 is a personal challenge for 2012.
To experience and learn about 12 web technologies through the 12 months of the year.
At any level of experience or for any purpose.
We like learning by doing.
So this presentation was also built while learning something new - impress.js
And we’re also teaching ourselves how to stand up and talk to people.
The 12412 site... is a work in progress.
Wordpress powered, based on a stripped down theme created by Paul.
There’s a lot missing.
Working on it through the year is part of the project.
Who knows where it will end up?
Putting yourself out there is a gamble.
Especially when the evolution is out there too.But this feels like a good time to be encouraging people to get on and learn something new.
We started at the end of November with an idea and a Mailchimp sign up form.
We hacked a theme together over Christmas
(about the only spare time we had).
Designed in the browser.
Made responsive based on what "felt" right.
By January 1st we had 190 subscribers ready to email.
All generated through Twitter and word of mouth.
83.2% open rate.
(to date)
First week of January - 1,204 visits.
Helped by a great reaction online, and a few bloggers spreading the word.
So now we "just" have to keep it up.
Everything we release will be open source, including our Wordpress theme.
The three of us have mapped out personal projects and are getting started.
A growing number are also sharing our goal to learn and challenge themselves.
